PADI defines technical diving as diving other than conventional recreational or commercial diving that takes divers beyond recreational diving limits. It is further defined as an activity that includes one or more of the following: diving beyond 40 meters/130 feet, required stage decompression, diving in an overhead environment beyond 130 linear feet from the surface, accelerated stage decompression and/or the use of multiple gas mixtures in a single dive.

See also PADI TecRec course chart at the bottom of this page.

I am teaching my technical diving courses exclusively in Sidemount configuration because that is where I have most experience in. So I am leaving the Backmount training to my more experienced colleagues.

Discover Tec Diving, Tec 40 and Tec Instructor

Discover Tec allows divers curious about tec diving to try out a full technical rig in controlled conditions. The course may be credited toward the Tec 40 course if the participant meets all performance requirements for the dive.

Tec 40 course introduces divers to limited decompression diving within accepted recreational depth limits. Therefore, to accommodate divers interested in very limited tec diving, the Tec 40 equipment requirements are only a bit beyond those of the standard recreational kit. Candidates interested in continuing their tec education later can do the course in ful tec rig. Certified Tec 40 divers are allowed to make decompression dives to a maximum depth of 40 meters/130 feet with no more than 10 minutes of decompression.

Tec 45, Tec 50 & Tec Deep Instructor

Tec 45 course provides a transitional qualification while continuing to develop as a technical diver. This diver is qualified to make limited technical decompression dives using the equipment and the procedures used at the Tec Deep Diver level. However, qualifications are narrow, reflecting comparatively limited training and experience. Certified Tec 45 divers are qualified to make multistop decompression dives that employ EANx and oxygen for accelerated decompression.

Tec 50 course is the complete, entry-level skill set for extensive open circuit deep decompression tec diving (formerly Tec Deep Diver). Tec 50 divers are qualified to make gas switch extended no-stop dives, decompression stop dives and accelerated decompression dives using air, enriched air and pure oxygen to a maximum depth of 50 meters/160 feet using technical diving equipment and procedures.

Tec Sidemount Diver & Tec Sidemount Instructor

Tec Sidemount Diver covers the use of sidemount configuration for technical diving. It has been developed for recreational divers who want to use sidemount as the enter open-circuit tec diving, as well as for experienced tec divers who want to transition to sidemount.

Tec Gas Blender & Tec Gas Blender Instructor

Tec Gas Blender course covers the physical properties of oxygen, its associated hazards, handling requirements and what cleaning equipment is necessary as well as the five methods of obtaining the desired enriched air nitrox mix and the various methods used to obtain proper helium mixes.
